휴가 같은 전시, 워너 브롱크호스트 《Every Moment》 at 그라운드시소

여름 휴가철이면 어디로 떠나야 할지 고민이 됩니다. 하지만 뜨거운 날씨와 인파를 감당할 자신이 없어, 이번 연휴에는 실내 전시를 선택했습니다. 단순히 시원한 공간에 머무르는 것이 아니라, 휴가 같은 기분을 줄 수 있는 전시를 찾던 중 서촌의 그라운드시소에서 열린 워너 브롱크호스트(Warner Broomkhorst) 전시를 보기로 했습니다. 아이와 함께 가기에 무겁지 않고, 즐겁게 감상할 수 있는 작품이 많을 것 같았기 때문입니다.

그라운드시소, 서촌의 특별한 전시 공간

전시가 열린 그라운드시소는 서촌의 중심부에 자리한 복합 전시 공간입니다. 외관은 콘크리트와 유리로 이루어진 단순하지만 힘 있는 건축적 형태를 가지고 있으며, 내부는 층마다 다른 분위기로 구성되어 있어 작품의 흐름을 따라 이동하기 좋은 구조입니다.

그라운드시소는 주로 대중과 예술을 잇는 기획 전시에 집중해 왔습니다. 과거에는 요시고 사진전, 문도 멘도, 슈타이들 북 컬쳐 등 국내외 대중적으로 사랑받는 전시들이 열렸습니다. 이러한 이력 덕분에 현대미술에 익숙하지 않은 관람객도 부담 없이 즐길 수 있는, ‘문화와 휴식이 공존하는 공간’으로 자리매김해왔습니다.

워너 브롱크호스트는 남아프리카공화국 출신으로, 현재 호주를 기반으로 활동하는 아티스트입니다. 그의 작품은 거친 텍스처의 캔버스 위에 미니어처 인물을 배치하는 독특한 방식으로 잘 알려져 있습니다. 배경이 파도나 모래사장, 테니스 코트, 심지어 한강으로 변주되며 관람객은 작은 인물들을 통해 거대한 서사와 순간의 이야기를 발견하게 됩니다.

세계 주요 도시에서 전시를 이어왔고 글로벌 브랜드와 협업도 활발히 진행하는 그는, 두 아이의 아버지이기도 합니다. 그래서인지 작품에는 일상과 유머, 가족적인 따뜻함이 담겨 있어 어린이 관람객도 쉽게 다가갈 수 있었습니다. 실제로 전시장에는 어린이와 가족 단위의 관람객이 많았고, 저희 아이도 편안하게 작품을 즐길 수 있었습니다.

전시 구성 — 다섯 개의 섹션으로 나뉜 이야기

전시는 2층부터 4층까지 총 다섯 개의 섹션으로 구성되었습니다.

• Section 1 – The Lab (2층)
  작가의 작업 과정을 담은 다큐멘터리와 작업실을 재현한 공간이 있어, 그의 예술관을 이해하는 출발점이 되었습니다.

• Section 2 – Life on Canvas (3층)
  삶의 다양한 순간들이 캔버스 위에 펼쳐졌습니다. 작은 인물들이 만들어내는 서사가 특히 흥미로웠습니다.

전시를 보고 난 뒤의 생각

이번 전시는 ‘깊은 울림’이라기보다는 하루를 잘 마무리한 뒤 쓰는 일기 같은 전시였습니다. 무겁지 않고, 즐겁고, 편안하게 볼 수 있었습니다. 그래서인지 관람 후에는 좋은 에너지가 남았습니다.

다만 아쉬움도 있었습니다. 전시 공간의 절반 이상이 원화가 아닌 프린트 작품으로 채워져 있었습니다. 워너 브롱크호스트의 매력은 거친 텍스처와 두꺼운 물감이 만들어내는 질감인데, 프린트로는 그 느낌을 온전히 전달받기 어려웠습니다. 티켓 가격이 저렴한 편은 아니었던 만큼, 원화 중심으로 구성되었다면 훨씬 더 깊은 감동을 줄 수 있었을 것 같습니다.

마무리하며

전시는 때로는 삶을 무겁게 되돌아보게 만들기도 하고, 때로는 먹먹한 울림을 주기도 합니다. 그러나 이번 전시는 가볍고 유쾌한 휴가 같은 시간이었습니다. 아이와 함께 가도 좋고, 서촌 산책과 함께 곁들여도 좋은 전시였습니다.

When summer vacation comes around, I often wonder where to go. This year, however, I wasn’t confident about dealing with the heat and the crowds, so I decided to spend the holidays indoors. I wanted something that would still feel like a holiday, and that’s how I chose to visit the exhibition of Warner Bronkhorst at Ground Seesaw in Seochon. Since I was going with my child, I was looking for something lighter in mood, yet enjoyable for both of us.

Ground Seesaw, a Unique Exhibition Space in Seochon

Ground Seesaw is a cultural complex located in the heart of Seochon. Its exterior, made of concrete and glass, has a simple yet striking architectural form, while the interior unfolds across multiple floors, allowing visitors to follow the flow of the exhibition naturally.

The venue has focused on bridging the gap between art and the public, hosting exhibitions that are widely beloved by audiences. Past shows include the Yoshigo Photography Exhibition, Mundo Mendoza, and Steidl Book Culture, all of which reflect its dedication to accessible yet high-quality programming. Thanks to this history, Ground Seesaw has earned a reputation as a place where both art enthusiasts and casual visitors can enjoy contemporary art in a relaxed setting.

Warner Bronkhorst — Small Figures on Rough Backgrounds

Warner Bronkhorst, originally from South Africa and now based in Australia, is known for his distinctive technique of placing miniature figures on textured canvases. His backgrounds transform into waves, beaches, tennis courts, or even the Han River, inviting viewers to discover stories within seemingly ordinary scenes.

He has held exhibitions in major cities worldwide and has collaborated with global brands while continuing to expand his unique artistic universe. As a father of two, many of his works carry a warmth and sense of humor that resonates with children as well as adults. During my visit, I noticed many families with kids, and my daughter also found the works approachable and engaging.

Exhibition Structure — Five Sections of Stories

The exhibition was spread across the 2nd to 4th floors, divided into five thematic sections:

  A documentary and recreated studio space introduced the artist’s working process and philosophy.

  Everyday moments depicted on canvas, where miniature figures created fascinating narratives.

  Works exploring imaginative freedom beyond established boundaries.

• Section 4 – Wet (4th floor)
  Paintings that conveyed the texture of water, waves, and moisture, filling the space with a sense of vitality.

• Section 5 – Every Moment (4th floor)
  The highlight of the exhibition: a specially created piece of the Han River. Rendered in three colors, it evoked a peaceful and serene impression.

Reflections After the Visit

This exhibition wasn’t one that left me with a heavy or profound afterthought. Instead, it felt like a lighthearted diary entry at the end of a happy day. It was cheerful, relaxed, and easy to enjoy — exactly the kind of uplifting experience I needed.

That said, I did have one disappointment. More than half of the works on display were printed reproductions rather than original paintings. Since Bronkhorst’s art shines through its thick textures and layered brushstrokes, much of the impact was lost in print. Considering the ticket price, I felt the exhibition would have been more meaningful if it had focused more heavily on original works.

In Closing

Some exhibitions weigh on your heart, while others move you with deep emotions. This one, however, was like a short, refreshing holiday. It was light, enjoyable, and even better as part of a walk through Seochon.
