거리에서 만난 예술, 손끝으로 다시 만나다 — 로버트 인디애나의 LOVE

발렌타인데이에 저희 가족은 서로를 위한 작은 선물로 LEGO의 ‘LOVE’ 블럭을 만들었습니다. 아이와 함께 조립하면서 느꼈던 건, 단순히 예쁜 장식 그 이상이었습니다.

이 구조, 어디선가 봤던 익숙한 형태. 뉴욕 거리에서, 도쿄의 미술관에서, 그리고 서울 명동 거리에서 여러 번 마주쳤던 그 조각 작품, 로버트 인디애나의 LOVE였습니다.

작품이 익숙해지는 방식

LEGO 블럭을 조립하다 보면 작품의 구조가 자연스럽게 손에 익습니다. 단어의 배치, 기울어진 ‘O’의 각도, 입체적으로 쌓여 올라가는 블럭의 흐름까지.
아이에게도 이 조각이 단순히 ‘거리에서 본 것’이 아니라 ‘내가 직접 만든 것’으로 느껴졌던 것 같습니다. 예술이 우리 곁에 가까이 있다는 걸 느끼게 해주는 좋은 방식이었죠. LEGO의 아트 시리즈는 명화를 재현하거나 유명 조각을 입체적으로 이해하는 데 도움이 되기도 합니다.

단순함 속에 깊은 의미를 담다 

로버트 인디애나(1928–2018)는 미국 인디애나주 출신의 현대미술가로, 팝아트의 거장으로 알려져 있습니다.
그는 시카고예술대학을 졸업한 뒤 1960년대 뉴욕을 중심으로 활동하며 독창적인 스타일을 발전시켰습니다. 앤디 워홀, 로이 리히텐슈타인과 함께 미국 팝아트를 대표하는 작가로 평가받지만, 인디애나는 조금 다른 접근을 시도했습니다.

그는 광고적 이미지보다는 단어와 숫자, 자전적 메시지를 시각 언어로 바꾸는 작업에 집중했습니다.

대표작인 LOVE는 1964년 뉴욕현대미술관(MoMA)에서 크리스마스 카드 디자인을 의뢰받으며 처음 시작되었습니다.
그는 ‘사랑’이라는 단어를 대문자로 분할해 시각적으로 구성하고, 강렬한 색상으로 감정을 전달했습니다. 이후 1966년 입체 조각으로 제작되면서 대중적인 상징이 되었고, 지금은 세계 곳곳에서 사람들의 사진 속에 함께 등장합니다.

예술의 확장 — HOPE

2008년, 인디애나는 버락 오바마의 대선 캠페인을 지지하며 새로운 단어, HOPE를 시리즈로 선보였습니다. 빨강, 파랑, 흰색으로 구성된 이 작품은 정치적 메시지를 예술로 전달하며 다시 한 번 큰 반향을 일으켰습니다. 그의 작업은 단순한 시각적 재미를 넘어, 사회적 메시지와 감정을 압축해 전달하는 힘이 있습니다.

Art We Met on the Street, Revisited at Our Fingertips — Robert Indiana’s LOVE

On Valentine’s Day, our family gifted each other a small but meaningful present — a LEGO LOVE block.
As we assembled it together with our child, we realized it was more than just a pretty decoration.

The shape felt instantly familiar.
We had seen this form many times — on the streets of New York, inside a museum in Tokyo, and even near the bustling streets of Myeong-dong in Seoul.
It was Robert Indiana’s iconic sculpture, LOVE.

A Work That Becomes Familiar

As we put the LEGO pieces together, we naturally came to understand the structure of the artwork — the placement of the letters, the tilted “O,” and the way the blocks stacked up to form a solid, balanced shape.

For our child, it wasn’t just a sculpture we once passed by — it became something personal, something they had made with their own hands.
It reminded us how art can feel closer when we interact with it.

LEGO’s art series offers more than fun — it’s a hands-on way to explore iconic works, from famous paintings to modern sculptures. It helps both children and adults view art from a structural, creative perspective.

Meaning in Simplicity

Robert Indiana (1928–2018) was a contemporary artist from the state of Indiana, USA, and is widely regarded as a master of Pop Art.
After graduating from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, he became active in the New York art scene during the 1960s and developed a distinctive style.

While he is often mentioned alongside Pop Art icons like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, Indiana took a different approach.
Rather than focusing on advertising-inspired imagery, he used words, numbers, and personal messages as visual language.

His most iconic work, LOVE, began in 1964 when the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York commissioned him to design a Christmas card.
He arranged the word “LOVE” in bold capital letters, tilting the “O,” and used vibrant colors to express emotion.

In 1966, he transformed the design into a three-dimensional sculpture — and it quickly became a cultural symbol seen in cities around the world and in countless personal photos.

Expanding the Message — HOPE

In 2008, Indiana created another word-based sculpture, HOPE, to support Barack Obama’s presidential campaign.
Using red, blue, and white, the piece conveyed political optimism through art. Once again, Indiana's work resonated widely, becoming both an artistic and symbolic message of the time.

His practice went beyond visual appeal. His art distilled messages and emotions into a form that could be universally understood.
