KAWS — 아트 토이로 만나는 동시대 미술의 얼굴

요즘 전시회에서는 아트 토이를 쉽게 접할 수 있습니다. 그중에서도 가장 대표적인 이름을 꼽자면 단연 카우스(KAWS)일 것입니다.
귀엽지만은 않은 그 모습, 어딘가 익숙한 실루엣, 화려한 색감 속에 숨겨진 쓸쓸함. 그가 만든 아트 토이들을 보다 보면, ‘이건 단순한 장난감이 아닌데?’라는 생각이 들곤 합니다.

저 역시 전시장에서 카우스의 토이들을 마주한 이후, 그의 작품 세계가 궁금해졌고, 성북동 서울시립미술관 아카이브에서 관련 서적을 찾아보며 더 깊이 들여다보게 되었습니다.


미키마우스 같은 실루엣, 낯설게 하기

KAWS의 대표 캐릭터인 ‘Companion’은 미키마우스를 연상시키는 귀여운 실루엣에 해골 형태의 얼굴, 그리고 X자로 표시된 눈을 가지고 있습니다.
이 ‘X자 눈’은 단순한 장식이 아니라, 부정과 저항, Original Fake라는 그래피티 정신을 담고 있다고 합니다.
KAWS는 거리에서 시작한 작가답게, 처음에는 버스 정류장 광고나 패션 광고판 위에 자신의 캐릭터를 덧씌우는 방식으로 작업을 했습니다. 우리가 익히 아는 대상을 변형하고 개입함으로써, 대중문화의 상징을 새롭게 바라보게 만드는 시도였죠.


친근함 속의 공허함

그의 캐릭터들은 귀엽고 유쾌해 보이지만, 자세히 들여다보면 지치고 외로운 현대인의 감정이 담겨 있는 듯합니다. Companion은 종종 눈을 가리고 있거나, 웅크린 자세를 하고 있으며, 슬퍼 보이기까지 합니다.
이처럼 감정의 양면성을 담아낸 모습이 카우스 작업의 중요한 매력입니다. 익숙하지만 낯설고, 귀엽지만 쓸쓸한 감정이 작품 속에 함께 존재합니다.


장난감인가, 예술인가?

카우스는 유니클로, 디올, 나이키 등 다양한 브랜드와 협업해 피규어, 의류, 가방 등 다양한 형태로 자신의 작업을 선보였습니다.
이러한 행보에 대해 “예술이 상업화되었다”는 비판도 있지만, 오히려 그는 끊임없이 질문을 던집니다.

“예술은 어디까지 예술인가?”

작가의 이런 태도는 그가 가장 대중적인 방식으로 예술의 경계를 탐색하고 있다는 증거이기도 합니다. 누구나 접할 수 있는 이미지, 누구나 손에 쥘 수 있는 작품을 통해 그는 미술의 문턱을 낮추고 새로운 시대의 감상법을 제시하고 있습니다.

KAWS — A Contemporary Art Icon Through Art Toys

In recent exhibitions, art toys are no longer a rare sight. Among the most recognizable names in this field, KAWS undeniably stands out.
There’s something charming yet unsettling about his creations—familiar silhouettes with vibrant colors, hiding a sense of melancholy beneath the surface. When encountering his works, one might easily find themselves wondering:
“This doesn’t feel like just a toy.”

I had the same curiosity after seeing his pieces in an exhibition. Wanting to learn more, I visited the archive at the Seoul Museum of Art in Seongbuk-dong and explored publications on his work to better understand the world he creates.


A Mickey-Like Silhouette, Made Strange

KAWS’s signature character, Companion, resembles the familiar form of Mickey Mouse—with its rounded ears and childlike posture—but its skull-shaped head and X-marked eyes offer an immediate sense of disruption.
These X eyes aren’t simply a stylistic quirk. They symbolize negation, resistance, and a continuation of the graffiti ethos rooted in the phrase “Original Fake.”
KAWS, who began as a street artist, used to overlay his characters onto bus stop ads or fashion posters. Through this act of visual intervention, he prompted viewers to re-examine the symbols of mass culture they thought they knew so well.


Emptiness Beneath Familiarity

Though his characters may appear playful and endearing at first glance, there’s a deeper emotional undercurrent running through them.
Companion is often seen covering its face, crouching, or standing with a visible sense of sadness—reflecting the emotional fatigue and loneliness of modern life.
This duality of emotion—cuteness paired with vulnerability, familiarity laced with alienation—is a central part of what draws people into KAWS’s world.


Toy or Art?

KAWS has collaborated with brands like UNIQLO, Dior, and Nike, expanding his visual language into figures, clothing, and accessories.
Some critics argue that this commercial approach undermines his artistic integrity. But KAWS flips the question:

“Where does art end, and where does it begin?”

His practice is arguably one of the most accessible explorations of contemporary art today. By making images and objects that anyone can recognize—or even own—he lowers the threshold of art and proposes a new way to engage with it in the 21st century.
