어쩌다 보니 오늘 택배 박스 테이프를 쓸 일이 있었고, 간식으로 바나나를 먹었다.
순간 문득 떠오른 작품이 있었다.
세상에서 가장 비싼 바나나, 마우리치오 카텔란(Maurizio Cattelan)의 Comedian.

일상과 유머, 그리고 예술의 경계

이탈리아 출신의 동시대 작가 마우리치오 카텔란(1960–)은 유머와 아이러니를 예술의 언어로 사용하는 작가입니다.
그는 익숙한 오브제를 통해 낯선 질문을 던지고, 평범한 사물을 개념적 조형물로 바꾸는 방식을 통해 현대 미술계의 고정관념을 흔듭니다.

Comedian — 바나나 하나로 완성된 개념미술

2019년 마이애미 아트바젤에서 처음 공개된 Comedian은 덕트 테이프로 벽에 붙인 바나나 한 개로 구성된 작품입니다.
처음 이 작품이 12만 달러에 판매됐을 때 많은 이들이 의문을 던졌지만, 이후 전 세계 곳곳에서 반복되는 퍼포먼스와 해석을 통해 예술과 소비, 개입과 감상 사이의 경계를 탐색하는 상징적 작품으로 자리 잡았습니다.

2023년 서울 리움미술관 회고전에서도 다시 소개되었으며, 관객의 적극적인 반응이 뒤따랐습니다.
2024년에는 뉴욕 소더비 경매에서 약 87억 원에 낙찰되었고, 작품의 일부로서 ‘먹는 행위’를 연출한 수집가의 퍼포먼스도 화제가 되었습니다.

카텔란은 예술은 완성되는 순간 작가의 손을 떠난다고 말합니다.

Today, I happened to use duct tape for a delivery box, and later had a banana as a snack.
That simple combination reminded me of one particular artwork—
Maurizio Cattelan’s Comedian, the most expensive banana in the world.

Everyday Humor, and the Edges of Art

Born in Italy in 1960, Maurizio Cattelan is a contemporary artist known for using humor, irony, and absurdity as key tools in his practice.
He challenges conventional boundaries in the art world by turning familiar objects into conceptual provocations that make viewers pause and reflect.

Comedian — A Banana that Became Conceptual Art

First unveiled at Art Basel Miami in 2019, Comedian consists of a single banana duct-taped to a wall.
The piece sold for $120,000 and quickly gained global attention. Over the years, it has been eaten, reinstalled, reinterpreted, and discussed countless times—transforming into a symbol that explores the blurred lines between art and consumption, engagement and disruption.

In 2023, it appeared again at his retrospective exhibition at the Leeum Museum of Art in Seoul.
By 2024, it was sold at auction for nearly 8.7 billion KRW (approx. $6.24 million), accompanied by a collector’s performance of eating the banana in front of cameras.

“Once it’s done, the work no longer belongs to me.”

Cattelan believes that once an artwork is completed, it leaves the artist’s hands.
He considers public response, media coverage, and even acts like someone eating the artwork to be extensions of the piece itself.
As he once said:

“If something can be reduced to a single clear message, then it’s already dead artistically.”

Comedian is not meant to deliver answers—it keeps generating questions.
