골목길에서의 첫 만남

작년 프랑스 여행, 파리의 한 골목에서였습니다. 햇볕이 따뜻하게 내려앉은 오후, 무심히 걷던 발걸음이 어느 벽 앞에서 멈췄습니다. 거기엔 낯선 픽셀 이미지가 붙어 있었죠.

멀리서는 단순한 네모 블록 같았는데, 가까이 다가가니 80년대 게임 속 캐릭터처럼 보였습니다. 그 순간, 머릿속에 전혀 예상치 못한 질문이 스쳤습니다. ‘이게 뭐지? 누가, 왜 여기에?’

마치 길거리에서 숨겨진 띠부실을 찾거나 포켓몬고에서 희귀 캐릭터를 잡은 듯한 순간.

그때는 몰랐습니다. 그게 전 세계를 누비는 거리 예술가 인베이더(Invader)의 작품이라는 걸.

전 세계를 ‘침략’한 거리 예술가 인베이더

작업 개요

인베이더는 지난 27년간 전 세계 32개국 172개 도시에서 약 4,000여 점의 모자이크를 설치했습니다. 프로젝트 이름은 ‘Invasions’ — 도심을 침략하듯 퍼져 나갑니다.

설치 방식과 철학

  • 도시별 맞춤 디자인
  • ‘도심 속 침술(Urban Acupuncture)’ 개념으로 특정 지점에 예술적 개입
  • 타일과 강력 접착제, 보안장치로 장기 보존
작품이 설치되는 순간, 그 장소는 작은 미술관이 된다.

불법성과 익명성

프랑스에서 그의 작업은 공공시설 훼손으로 불법입니다. 그래서 그는 항상 가면과 고글을 쓰고 활동하며, 정체를 철저히 감춥니다. 얼굴 없는 예술가라는 점이 오히려 호기심을 자극합니다.

루빅큐브로 그리는 그림

인베이더는 모자이크 외에도 루빅큐브를 이용한 ‘루빅큐비즘(Rubikcubism)’ 시리즈로 유명합니다. 명화나 유명 인물을 큐브로 재해석하며, 축구 선수 펠레의 초상화를 제작하기도 했습니다.

나만의 미술관

인베이더의 작품은 지도에 표시되지 않습니다. 티켓도 필요 없고, 입장 시간도 없습니다. 길을 걷다 우연히 발견하는 순간, 그곳은 나만의 전시 공간이 됩니다.

찾아보니 우리나라에는 단 하나, 대전시립미술관 근처에 작품이 있다고 합니다. 다음에는 대전에 가서 그 ‘도심 속 침술’을 직접 찾아볼 예정입니다.

The First Encounter in a Back Alley

During my trip to France last year, I was wandering through a small alley in Paris. It was a warm afternoon, the sunlight spilling gently across the cobblestones, when my steps suddenly stopped in front of a wall. On it was a strange pixelated image.

From afar, it looked like nothing more than a simple block of squares. But as I moved closer, it resembled a character straight out of an 80s video game. In that moment, one unexpected question popped into my head: “What is this? Who put it here, and why?”

It felt like finding a hidden collectible sticker in the street, or catching a rare Pokémon in Pokémon GO.

I didn’t know it then, but that piece belonged to Invader, a street artist whose work has spread across the globe.

Invader – The Artist Who ‘Invaded’ Cities Worldwide

Project Overview

Over the past 27 years, Invader has installed around 4,000 mosaic works in 172 cities across 32 countries. The project is called Invasions — expanding through urban spaces like a playful invasion.

Installation Style & Philosophy

  • Custom designs inspired by each city
  • “Urban Acupuncture” – targeting specific spots for artistic intervention
  • Durable materials with tiles, strong adhesive, and security measures
The moment a work is installed, the location becomes a small open-air museum.

Illegality and Anonymity

In France, Invader’s work is technically illegal under public property laws. To protect his identity, he always works with a mask and goggles, maintaining complete anonymity — a mystery that fuels curiosity.

Rubikcubism

Beyond mosaics, Invader is also known for his Rubikcubism series, where he recreates famous artworks and portraits using Rubik’s cubes. His pieces include works like a portrait of football legend Pelé.

My Own Personal Museum

Invader’s works are not listed on any official map. No ticket is required, and there’s no opening or closing time. When you stumble upon one, the street itself becomes your own personal gallery.

I recently learned that in South Korea, there’s only one Invader installation — near the Daejeon Museum of Art. Next time, I plan to visit Daejeon to find this piece of “urban acupuncture” myself.
