굿모닝타운 Goodmorningtown – 관계를 닮은 캔버스
종로구 소격동, 학고재갤러리 뒤편에 위치한 학고재 아트센터는 한국의 젊은 작가들과 미술인들이 자유롭게 교류할 수 있기를 바라는 공간이라고 합니다. 처음에는 단순히 ‘학고재 부속 공간’ 정도로만 생각했는데, 그런 이야기를 듣고 나니 앞으로 이 근처를 지날 때마다 그 안에서 어떤 새로운 작가와 작업을 만날 수 있을지 기대하게 됩니다.
그중 한 전시가 기억에 남습니다.
작가명 굿모닝타운(Goodmorningtown). 관람 당시에는 타투이스트 박도영 작가의 활동명이라는 걸 모르고 작업을 감상했습니다.
아이같은 형상, 관계를 품은 구성
전시 공간에 들어섰을 때 가장 먼저 눈에 들어온 건 마치 아이들이 가지고 노는 클레이 같은 재질로 채워진 캔버스들이었습니다. 귀엽고 유쾌한 느낌의 이 작품들은 얼핏 보면 단순하지만, 하나하나 자세히 들여다보면 모양도 표정도 모두 다르다는 걸 알 수 있었습니다.
토끼, 강아지, 화분, 외계인 등 다양한 오브제들이 서로 편안하게 어울려 있는 장면들. 마치 “이 안의 우리들끼리는 충분히 만족스럽고 행복해”라고 말하고 있는 듯한 구성이 인상 깊었습니다.
지하 전시실에서는 입체 구조물 작품도 볼 수 있었는데, 전시장 안내를 통해 “작은 대화로 시작하는 관계를 시각화한 작품”이라는 설명을 들었습니다.
귀엽고 밝은 색감 속에 숨겨진 메시지는 단순하지만 오히려 그래서 더 깊었습니다. 우리가 살아가는 관계들을 가장 순수한 언어로 다시 설명해주는 듯한 감각이 있었거든요.
아이에서 어른으로, 작가가 풀어내는 우리 안의 대화
굿모닝타운의 작업은 겉으로는 유쾌하고 장난스러워 보이지만, 그 안에 담긴 구조와 정서는 꽤 정교하게 설계되어 있다는 인상을 받았습니다.
그 관계 안에서 중심이 되거나, 조용히 곁에 머무르거나, 어떤 역할로 존재하든 모두가 연결되어 있다는 느낌을 주었어요.
귀엽고 따뜻한 작품을 보며 미소 지었지만, 전시장을 나서는 길엔 내가 속한 관계들에 대해서도 곰곰이 생각해보게 되는 전시였습니다.

Goodmorningtown – A Canvas That Resembles Our Relationships
Tucked behind Hakgojae Gallery in the quiet alleys of Sogyeok-dong, Seoul, Hakgojae Art Center is a space dedicated to fostering communication among Korea’s promising young artists and creatives. I had once thought of it as just an extension of the gallery, but after hearing about its purpose, I found myself wanting to stop by more often whenever I passed through the area.
It was in this space that I first encountered the work of Goodmorningtown, a name I later learned belongs to Park Doyoung, a tattooist and visual artist.
Childlike Forms, Carefully Composed Relationships
Upon entering the exhibition, the first thing that caught my eye was the canvas filled with clay-like figures, reminiscent of toys or characters made from modeling clay. At a glance, they appeared playful and lighthearted—but a closer look revealed that each figure had its own shape, expression, and individuality.
There were rabbits, dogs, flowerpots, aliens—charming little objects that seemed to be perfectly content with one another inside the frame. The arrangement gave off the impression of a small community where every character felt accepted and happy.
Downstairs in the basement level, I came across a sculptural installation. According to the exhibition guide, it visualized how a relationship begins with a small conversation.
Although the colors and imagery were childlike and whimsical, it felt as though the work was offering a simple and honest way of explaining the relationships we live within.
A Visual Language of Warmth and Belonging
Goodmorningtown’s work may seem playful on the surface, but there’s a surprising amount of structure and emotional clarity beneath it.
Whether a figure takes center stage or quietly lingers at the edge, there’s a sense that every element in the composition is part of a meaningful connection.
While the visual charm of the work made me smile, I left the exhibition reflecting on the dynamics of my own relationships—the kind that begin with a glance, a word, or a shared moment.
