자연 속 컬렉션 산책 — 양평 이함캠퍼스 EHAM CAMPUS

이함캠퍼스는 단순한 전시장이나 수장고 이상의 공간입니다.
자연 속에서 천천히 걸으며 시간을 들여 감상하고, 한 사람의 오랜 취향과 철학이 어떻게 물리적인 장소로 구현될 수 있는지를 직접 경험할 수 있습니다.

“문화를 소비하는 시대는 지났습니다. 이제는 문화의 주체가 되는 시대입니다.”
이곳을 만든 오황택 이사님의 철학처럼, 이함캠퍼스는 감상의 장소를 넘어 문화적 사고를 환기하는 공간으로 다가옵니다.

오래된 시간, 그리고 오랜 준비

이함캠퍼스는 1999년 건축가 김개천님과 두양문화재단의 오황택 이사님이 함께 완공한 공간입니다.
그러나 본격적인 개관까지는 20년 이상의 시간이 소요되었습니다.
그 시간 동안 오 이사님은 매일 이곳을 찾아 조경을 손수 가꾸며, 계획된 공간보다는 시간이 만든 장소로 캠퍼스를 완성해 왔습니다.

약 1만 평의 대지 위에 9개의 건물이 흩어져 있으며, 건물 간 동선은 오솔길과 잔디 언덕, 조각과 석조 유물을 지나도록 자연스럽게 연결되어 있습니다.
콘크리트 재질의 건축은 자연을 거스르지 않으며, 걸을 때마다 조용히 수집가의 내면을 들여다보는 듯한 감각을 선사합니다.

사물의 시차 – 수집된 디자인의 세계

방문 당시 전시되었던 〈사물의 시차〉는 디자인 가구를 중심으로 한 컬렉션 전시였습니다.
체어, 조명, 싱크대, 캐비닛 등 서로 다른 시대와 스타일의 오브제들이 하나의 공간에서 자연스럽게 어우러지고 있었습니다.

디자인 오브제 하나하나가 과도한 해설 없이 놓여 있었고, 관람객은 자신의 기억과 경험을 통해 그것들과 감각적으로 연결되는 시간이 있었습니다.

오 이사님은 유명과 무명, 예술과 공예, 오브제와 산업품 사이에 경계를 두지 않는 수집 철학을 지니고 계십니다. 이함캠퍼스는 바로 그 철학이 공간 전체에 구현된 사례입니다.

현재 전시 – 폴란드 포스터 컬렉션 (2025년 7월 기준)

현재 이함캠퍼스에서는 〈폴란드 포스터 컬렉션〉 전시를 진행하고 있습니다.
20세기 폴란드 포스터 디자인은 정치와 예술, 선전과 상징이 교차하는 지점에서 출발하였으며, 그 시각적 메시지는 강렬합니다.

디자인에 관심 있는 관람객이라면 단순한 그래픽 이상의 의미를 읽어낼 수 있는 전시입니다.

전시 이후의 여운 – 카페 콤마

전시 관람 후에는 캠퍼스 내 카페 콤마(COMMA*에서 쉬어가시길 권합니다.
연못과 맞닿은 유리 건물로 자연광이 깊이 들어오며, 내부에는 세계적인 디자이너들의 가구와 조명이 배치되어 있습니다.

핀란드 디자이너 에로 사리넨의 튤립 테이블, 일본 디자이너 시로 그라마타의 레드 캐비닛, 파리에서 사용되던 빈티지 할로페인 조명 등은 공간 자체가 또 하나의 디자인 전시처럼 느껴지게 합니다.

메뉴 또한 전문 파티셰가 만드는 케이크와 쿠키로 구성되어 있어, 공간의 미학과 맛이 자연스럽게 어우러집니다.

A Walk Through a Collection in Nature — EHAM CAMPUS, Yangpyeong

EHAM Campus is more than just an exhibition hall or storage facility.
Set amidst nature, it invites visitors to walk slowly, take time to appreciate the space, and experience how one person’s long-held taste and philosophy have taken form in the physical world.

“The era of consuming culture has passed. Now is the time to become the subject of culture.”

True to the philosophy of Director Hwang-Taek Oh, who envisioned this space, EHAM Campus goes beyond a place of appreciation—it becomes a place for cultural contemplation.

Time Accumulated, and Carefully Prepared

EHAM Campus was completed in 1999 by architect Gaecheon Kim and Hwang-Taek Oh, director of the Doyang Cultural Foundation.
However, it took over 20 years to officially open to the public.
During that time, Director Oh visited the campus daily, personally tending the landscaping and nurturing the site—not as a pre-planned structure, but as a place shaped over time.

Spread across 33,000 square meters of land are nine buildings thoughtfully placed among gentle hills and wooded paths.
The walkways connect visitors to sculptures, stone artifacts, and grassy knolls, while the minimalist concrete architecture blends into the natural surroundings.
As you walk, you feel as though you're quietly exploring the inner world of a collector.

The Time Difference of Objects – A World of Collected Design

During my visit, the featured exhibition was titled “The Time Difference of Objects”, centered around Director Oh’s extensive design furniture collection.
Chairs, lighting, sinks, and cabinets from different eras and styles coexisted, layered like a timeline of design.

Each object was presented as it was—unframed, unpedestaled—inviting the viewer to connect through their own memories and experiences.
This subtle and intuitive curation style left a strong impression.

Director Oh does not draw lines between the famous and unknown, art and craft, or object and industry.
His collection stems from the belief that “there is no hierarchy in culture,” and EHAM Campus reflects that belief in its entirety.

Current Exhibition – Polish Poster Collection (As of July 2025)

The current exhibition at EHAM Campus features a collection of Polish posters.
Born from the socio-political and artistic movements of 20th-century Poland, these posters convey visually powerful and symbolic messages.

For those with an interest in design, this is a compelling exhibition worth spending time with.
It offers more than just graphic art—it reflects a complex cultural narrative.

A Moment of Rest – Café COMMA

After exploring the campus, I recommend a break at Café COMMA, located within the grounds.
With floor-to-ceiling glass overlooking a pond, the space is filled with natural light and tastefully curated furniture.

Here you’ll find pieces like Eero Saarinen’s iconic Tulip table, Shiro Kuramata’s vibrant red cabinet, and vintage halophane lights from Paris—making the café feel like an extension of the exhibition itself.

The menu features cakes and cookies crafted by a pâtissier trained at Le Cordon Bleu and Nakamura Culinary School, offering a sensory harmony of flavor and form.
