국제갤러리에서 만난 두 개의 전시
《Next Painting: As We Are》 & 《아득한 오늘》
서울 삼청동 국제갤러리에서 현재 동시에 진행 중인 두 전시는 전혀 다른 결로 오늘의 예술을 들여다보게 합니다.
하나는 ‘지금 회화는 어디로 가는가’라는 질문을,
다른 하나는 ‘전통은 오늘 우리에게 어떤 감각으로 다가오는가’라는 질문을 던집니다.

이 전시는 밀레니얼 세대의 젊은 작가 여섯 명이 참여한 그룹전입니다.
디지털 환경 속에서 태어나 자란 이들이 ‘회화’라는 오래된 매체를 어떻게 받아들이고 있는지를 보여줍니다.
스마트폰 속 이미지가 넘쳐나는 시대, 이들은 오히려 물감의 질감, 붓의 흔적, 화면의 물리성을 다시 탐색합니다.
참여 작가인 고등어, 김세은, 유신애, 이은새, 전병구, 정이지의 작업은 각기 다른 접근을 가지고 있지만, 공통적으로 ‘다음 회화’의 가능성을 열고 있습니다.
정이지의 회화는 사진의 순간성과 감정의 농도를 함께 담아내며,
김세은은 도시의 터널처럼 신체적으로 지나가는 공간을 회화로 옮깁니다.
고등어는 드로잉을 기반으로 한 밀도 높은 붓질로 기억의 흐름을 그려냅니다.
디지털 속도를 견제하듯, 이들의 회화는 오히려 ‘느림’을 감각하게 만듭니다.
화면을 오래 바라보게 하는 힘, 그 힘이 이번 전시의 인상으로 남습니다.

한옥 안에서 마주한 현대미술은 시간을 구부려 놓은 듯한 인상을 줍니다.
박찬경 작가가 기획한 이번 전시는 '전통'을 새롭게 마주하는 감각을 전합니다.
이곳에서 전통은 박제된 유산이 아니라, 여전히 변하고 있는 살아 있는 감각으로 다가옵니다.
김범, 임영주, 조현택, 최수련, 최윤 등 다섯 명의 작가가 참여해
도자, 사진, 영상, 회화 등 다양한 매체로 ‘지금 여기의 전통’을 표현합니다.
예컨대 조현택의 사진은 주변의 사라진 신앙이나 풍경을 담담히 기록하며,
최수련의 회화는 전통적인 소재를 클리셰로 재해석해 오늘의 미감으로 전환합니다.
한옥 공간에 들어선 순간, 바닥과 벽, 마당과 하늘이 그대로 작품의 일부가 됩니다.
작품과 공간, 감상자 사이에 흐르는 느린 리듬이 유독 깊게 남습니다.
전시 제목처럼, ‘오늘’이지만 조금은 아득한 감정이 맴돕니다.

Currently on view at Kukje Gallery in Samcheong-dong, Seoul, are two exhibitions that offer contrasting yet complementary insights into contemporary art.
One asks, “Where is painting headed today?”
The other invites us to reflect on how tradition resonates in the present moment.

This group exhibition brings together six millennial-generation artists — Godeungeo, Kim Sae Eun, Yoo Shinae, Lee Eun Sae, Jeon Byeong Guk, and Jung Iji — who explore how a centuries-old medium like painting can still speak to our hyper-digital present.
These artists, all digital natives, confront the overload of contemporary imagery not by mimicking it, but by re-emphasizing the tactile, physical qualities of painting. The texture of oil paint, the rhythm of brushstrokes, and the surface of the canvas become sites of resistance — and reflection.
Each artist offers a distinct approach:
Jung Iji’s works are rooted in snapshots, translating emotional honesty into painterly compositions.
Kim Sae Eun recreates tunnel-like spaces, evoking bodily experiences on a large canvas.
Godeungeo transforms dense pencil lines into brushwork, revealing layers of memory and time.
Rather than accelerating, their paintings slow you down.
You find yourself lingering in front of each canvas — noticing, absorbing, and contemplating.

Venue: Kukje Gallery Hanok
Set within a traditional Korean hanok, this exhibition unfolds like a quiet conversation between past and present.
Curated by artist Park Chan-kyong, it explores how “tradition” lives on — not as a fixed heritage, but as something fluid and responsive to the present.
The exhibition features five artists — Kim Beom, Lim Young-ju, Cho Hyuntaek, Choi Sooryeon, and Choi Yun — whose works reinterpret folk beliefs, cultural memories, and inherited forms using a wide range of media including painting, ceramics, photography, video, and installation.
Cho Hyuntaek documents fading landscapes and shamanistic traces through photography,
while Choi Sooryeon deconstructs traditional motifs into a contemporary visual language.
In this setting, the hanok itself becomes part of the exhibition.
Its floors, walls, courtyard, and natural light all participate in shaping the viewer’s experience.
As you walk through, time seems to fold — the present moment tinged with a sense of distance, as if you are experiencing something “faraway” yet deeply familiar.
