유영국 Yoo Youngkuk (1916–2002)

Yoo Youngkuk’s works, rooted in the landscapes of Korea, continue to leave a refined and striking impression even today.
His use of color and form transcends time—so much so that his paintings sit seamlessly alongside those of contemporary artists, never feeling outdated or distant.
There is a quiet sense of exhilaration that arises when viewing the harmony of color and shape in his compositions.
Nature to Abstraction
Yoo Youngkuk is regarded as a pioneer of Korean abstract art.
He translated the essence of nature into visual form through bold primary colors and simplified shapes.
Born in Uljin, Gyeongbuk Province, he spent his early life surrounded by mountains, sea, and the shifting seasons. These natural rhythms became a deep well of inspiration.
To him, nature was not merely a subject to depict, but an emotional and sensory presence.
Through dots, lines, planes, and colors, he reimagined the landscapes around him as abstract expressions of feeling and structure.
Developing a New Visual Language
After studying modernist art at Bunka Gakuin in Tokyo, he returned to Korea and co-founded art groups such as the New Realism Group (Shinsasilpa), the Modern Art Association, and Sinsanghoe with fellow artists including Kim Whanki and Lee Gyusang.
These collectives introduced and advanced abstract art in Korea during a time of great social and political upheaval.
Despite the chaos of the post-war years, Yoo remained steadfast in his practice.
In 1963, he represented Korea at the São Paulo Biennale, gaining international recognition for his work.
Order and Emotion on the Canvas
Yoo’s paintings often feature primary colors—yellow, red, blue, and green—organized into restrained and balanced compositions.
At first glance, his forms—triangles, curves, and rectangles—appear simple, yet they reveal a deep understanding of the underlying order found in nature.
The motif of the “mountain” recurs throughout his work, not as a literal landscape, but as a symbol of inner stillness and reverence for nature.

A Legacy that Resonates Today
Over the course of his career, Yoo Youngkuk created more than 400 paintings and participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions both in Korea and abroad.
In 2016, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Deoksugung, held a major retrospective titled Absolute and Freedom, offering a comprehensive view of his artistic journey.
Even now, his color and form continue to communicate emotional depth and remain powerfully resonant through a contemporary lens.
