조용한 골목 끝에서 만난 작은 미술관

수년 전, 수원아이파크미술관에서 백영수 화백의 개인전을 우연히 본 적이 있습니다.
당시의 작품들은 놀라울 만큼 세련된 색과 구성으로 오래도록 기억에 남았습니다.
그런 작가의 미술관이 의정부에 있다는 이야기를 듣고, 마침 근처를 지날 기회에 조용히 들러보았습니다.

백영수미술관은 전시장을 따로 분리해둔 공간이 아닙니다.
작가가 생전에 실제로 사용하던 작업실과 거주 공간이 함께 있는 곳으로, 관장님은 백영수 화백의 부인이십니다.
공간 전체에 예술과 삶의 결이 함께 남아 있어, 마치 누군가의 집에 초대받은 듯한 인상을 줍니다.

고요한 색채, 따뜻한 감정

전시 규모는 크지 않지만, 오히려 덕분에 한 작품 앞에서 오랜 시간 머무를 수 있었습니다.
자연광이 스며드는 공간 안에서 바라본 백영수 화백의 그림은, 기억 속보다 훨씬 부드럽고 따뜻했습니다.
감은 눈을 가진 인물들, 옅은 분홍빛과 연두, 회색이 어우러진 화면.
그림을 본다는 느낌보다는, 그 속에 있는 감정을 조용히 함께 앉아 바라본다는 인상이 더 가까웠습니다.

백영수 화백에 대하여

(1922–2018)

백영수 화백은 한국 추상미술의 선구자로, 1947년 한국 최초의 추상미술 그룹인 신사실파의 창립 멤버였습니다.
김환기, 유영국 등과 함께 활동하며, 서정적이고 조형적인 추상미술을 한국 미술계에 소개했습니다.

이후 1970년대부터는 프랑스로 건너가, 유럽 전역에서 100여 회 이상의 개인전을 열었으며
말년에는 고국으로 돌아와 다시 붓을 들었습니다.
2016년 은관문화훈장을 수훈하며, 한국 현대미술사 속 그의 자리를 남겼습니다.

그의 대표 연작인 ‘모자상(Mother and Child)’은 유아적 순수성과 고요한 정서를 담고 있으며,
작고 타원형의 얼굴, 감은 눈, 부드러운 선과 색으로 표현된 인물들은
보는 이로 하여금 편안하고 따뜻한 감정을 느끼게 합니다.

A Quiet Museum in Uijeongbu, Where the Artist Once Lived

A Small Museum at the End of a Quiet Alley

Several years ago, I happened upon a solo exhibition by artist Paek Youngsu at the Suwon iPark Museum of Art.
Though it was my first encounter with his work, I was struck by the refined colors and delicate composition—surprisingly modern for an artist of his generation. That memory has stayed with me.

Recently, I had the chance to visit the Paek Youngsu Museum of Art, located in Uijeongbu. The museum is not a separate gallery space, but rather part of the home where the artist once lived and worked. His wife, who now serves as the director, still resides there. This blending of life and art gives the space a rare intimacy. It felt less like a museum, and more like being quietly invited into someone’s home.

Gentle Colors, Warm Emotions

The exhibition isn’t large, but that only allows more time to linger in front of each piece.
Natural light pours in through the windows, softly illuminating the works.
Paek’s paintings, seen in this light, feel even more tender than I remembered—pastel pinks, soft greens, and grays quietly fill the canvas.
His signature figures, with their closed eyes and rounded faces, seem not just to look inward, but to invite us to pause and reflect as well.

What I found here was not just a collection of paintings, but an atmosphere—an emotional space shaped by the life, work, and presence of the artist and his family.

About the Artist: Paek Youngsu (1922–2018)

Paek Youngsu was a pioneer of abstract art in Korea.
In 1947, he co-founded the country’s first abstract art collective, The New Realism Group (Shin Sa Sil Pa), along with artists like Kim Whanki and Yoo Youngkuk, helping to introduce abstract and formalist styles to the Korean art scene.

From the late 1970s, he lived in France and held over 100 solo exhibitions across Europe.
He later returned to Korea, continuing his practice, and in 2016 was awarded the Order of Cultural Merit (Silver Medal) for his contributions to Korean art.

His best-known series, "Mother and Child", features serene figures with oval faces and closed eyes.
Using soft, muted tones—pink, ivory, gray—his paintings evoke a sense of innocence, quietude, and gentle warmth.
