그중에서도 인천국제공항 제1터미널의 중심에서
예상치 못한 예술 작품 하나가 조용히 방문객을 맞이하고 있습니다.
서도호 작가의 설치 작업, 《집 속의 집(Home Within Home)》입니다.

한국을 처음 만나는 사람들을 위한 ‘예술의 환영 인사’

서도호 작가는 한국과 미국을 오가며 활동하는 세계적인 현대미술 작가입니다.

The airport is where every journey begins.
At the center of Incheon International Airport’s Terminal 1,
an unexpected piece of art quietly greets all who pass through.
It is Home Within Home, an installation by Korean contemporary artist Do Ho Suh.

A Gentle Artistic Welcome to Korea

Do Ho Suh is a globally acclaimed artist who moves between Korea and the United States.
His work often centers on the concept of ‘home’—not merely as a physical structure,
but as a vessel of memory, identity, and belonging.
To him, a house is not just where we live, but where our histories reside.

Home Within Home is exactly what the title suggests:
two overlapping houses nestled within one another.
The smaller structure inside the piece is a replica of Suh’s childhood home—
a traditional Korean hanok located in Seongbuk-dong, Seoul.
It was built by his father, the renowned Korean painter Suh Se Ok,
who modeled it after Yeongyeongdang, a building within Changdeokgung Palace.

Do Ho Suh spent his early years in this space,
experiencing the blend of traditional Korean architecture and modern 20th-century life.
Later, during his time in the United States,
he began to reflect on the stark contrast between the openness of hanok and the enclosed nature of Western apartments.
This contrast led him to begin his 'home' series,
recreating architectural spaces using translucent fabric—
sewing houses as one would tailor garments.

A Work That Belongs to Its Place

Unlike most art, Home Within Home is not housed in a gallery.
It’s installed at the very heart of the airport—
a place where thousands of people come and go every day.
There’s no explanatory plaque to demand your attention,
but the work quietly draws your gaze,
