뮤지엄산에서 안도 다다오 건축이 만들어내는 삼각형의 빛을 따라 걷다가,
삼각코트를 향하던 길목에서 ‘백남준관’이라는 안내를 보게 되었습니다.

처음 이곳에 왔을 땐 스쳐 지나갔던 공간이었는데,
이번엔 발길이 멈췄습니다.
그리고 생각지도 못한 백남준의 작품, 〈커뮤니케이션 타워〉를 만나게 되었습니다.

이 작품은 1994년에 만들어진 백남준의 대표작 중 하나입니다.
철 구조물 위에 브라운관 TV들이 층층이 쌓여 있는 이 타워는
멀리서 보면 송신탑 같고, 가까이서 보면 디지털 시대의 돌탑처럼 느껴집니다.

TV 화면은 실제로 작동하고 있었고,
여러 나라의 가면들이 작품 표면에 걸려 있어
익명 속에서 대화하는 현대인의 얼굴처럼 느껴졌습니다.

“하나의 원이 있다. 예술이다.
또 하나의 원이 있다. 통신이다.
그 겹쳐지는 곳에 커뮤니케이션 타워가 있다.”

그의 작품이 실제로 TV가 작동하는 상태로 살아 움직이는 모습을 국내에서 마주한 경험은 많지않았습니다. 국립현대미술관 과천관의 다다익선도 작동 시간이 정해져 있어서 거대한 오브제로 마주한 적이 더 많았습니다. 

단순히 미디어 아트를 넘어서,
예술과 통신, 익명성과 연결의 상징으로 기능하는 탑은
안도 다다오의 건축과 자연 속에서도 강한 존재감을 드러내고 있었습니다.

Encountering Communication Tower at Museum SAN

While walking through Museum SAN, following the triangular beams of light shaped by Tadao Ando’s architecture,
I noticed a small sign leading to the Nam June Paik Gallery, just before reaching the triangular court.

During my previous visit, I must have passed this space without realizing it.
But this time, I paused.
And there, quite unexpectedly, I encountered Nam June Paik’s Communication Tower.

A Paik work that actually functions

Created in 1994, Communication Tower is one of Nam June Paik’s representative media installations.
The piece is composed of stacked cathode-ray tube televisions and a steel structure,
resembling a broadcasting tower from a distance and a digital-era stone pagoda up close.

What stood out immediately was the fact that
the television monitors were switched on and fully operational.
Masks from different cultures hang from the tower,
recalling the anonymous faces of people who communicate online.

One line from the wall text lingered in my thoughts:

“There is one circle: Art.
Another circle: Communication.
Communication Tower exists in the overlapping space, like a jujube seed between them.”

The quiet impact of an unexpected encounter

Nam June Paik is a familiar name to many,
but it's not often that we see his works actively functioning in Korea.

At the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Gwacheon, The More the Better is a well-known piece,
but its screens are only turned on at designated times. More often, it feels like a monumental object rather than a living artwork.

That’s why encountering Communication Tower in this state—powered, glowing, and quietly communicating—felt significant.
The tower goes beyond media art. It becomes a symbol of connection, communication, and anonymity,
and asserts its presence amid the minimalist architecture and natural landscape of Museum SAN.
