후쿠오카 시립미술관 Fukuoka Art Museum
후쿠오카 여행을 하던 중, 오호리 공원 옆에 위치한 미술관을 잠시 들르게 되었습니다. 특별한 기대 없이 발걸음을 옮긴 곳이었지만, 예상치 못한 만남이 그곳에 기다리고 있었습니다.
1979년에 개관한 후쿠오카 시립미술관은 지역사회와 함께 오랜 시간 예술을 이어온 공공 미술관입니다. 동아시아 고미술부터 근현대 미술까지 다양한 작품을 소개하고 있으며, 상설 전시와 기획 전시를 통해 국내외 작가들의 작업을 꾸준히 선보이고 있습니다.
외관은 붉은 타일로 마감되어 있고, 넓은 광장과 로비를 지나 전시 공간으로 들어서는 구조입니다. 자연광이 은은하게 스며드는 건물 안으로 들어서면, 시간의 흐름이 조금씩 느려지는 듯한 인상을 받게 됩니다.
미술관이 소장한 작품은 16,000점이 넘는다고 합니다. 일본 근대 서양화의 흐름을 보여주는 구로다 세이키, 요시다 히로시 같은 작가들의 작품부터, 미로, 달리, 아니쉬 카푸어, 야요이 쿠사마처럼 국제적인 작가들의 작품도 함께 전시되어 있었습니다. 또한 불교 미술과 차도 도구를 포함한 고미술 컬렉션도 인상 깊게 다가왔습니다.
그렇게 조용히 공간을 거닐던 중, 야외 전시 구역에서 익숙한 이름을 발견하게 되었습니다. 이우환 작가의 설치 작품, Relatum이었습니다.
몇 개의 수직 기둥과 돌, 그리고 그 사이에 놓인 여백으로 구성된 이 작품은 단순한 조형 안에서 묵직한 긴장감을 품고 있었습니다. 자연광 아래에서 끊임없이 변하는 그림자와 공기 속에서, 작품은 시간과 공간, 사물과 사람 사이의 관계에 대해 조용히 말을 걸어오는 듯했습니다.
이우환 작가는 일본에서 활동한 이력도 가지고 있지만, 한국의 현대미술을 대표하는 인물로 잘 알려져 있습니다. 다른 나라의 미술관에서 그의 작품을 마주한 순간, 국적을 넘어선 예술의 울림이 낯선 공간 속에서도 깊이 전달된다는 사실을 다시 한번 느낄 수 있었습니다.
전시실을 나서는 길, 그날의 관람은 단순한 여행의 일부라기보다, 예술이 일상 속에 스며드는 순간을 조용히 마주한 경험으로 오래 기억될 것 같다는 생각이 들었습니다.

Fukuoka Art Museum
While traveling in Fukuoka, I stopped by a museum located next to Ōhori Park. I hadn’t planned the visit in advance, but an unexpected encounter was waiting inside.
Opened in 1979, the Fukuoka Art Museum is a public institution that has long played a central role in the local art scene. It houses a wide-ranging collection that spans from traditional East Asian art to modern and contemporary works. Through both permanent and special exhibitions, the museum introduces the work of artists from Japan and around the world.
The building, with its exterior finished in red ceramic tiles, features a spacious plaza and a sequence of spaces that gradually lead visitors into the exhibition areas. As you step inside, where soft natural light filters through, it feels as though time begins to slow down.
The museum’s collection includes over 16,000 works. Among them are paintings by key figures of modern Japanese Western-style painting such as Kuroda Seiki and Yoshida Hiroshi, along with works by internationally recognized artists like Joan Miró, Salvador Dalí, Anish Kapoor, and Yayoi Kusama. The museum also presents Buddhist art and tea ceremony artifacts as part of its traditional art holdings.
As I continued quietly through the galleries, I came upon a familiar name in the outdoor exhibition area: Lee Ufan.
His installation piece Relatum, composed of a few upright columns and stones arranged with deliberate spacing, embodied a tension that was subtle yet powerful. The work, open to the shifting light and air, invited reflection on the relationships between time, space, objects, and people.
Although Lee Ufan is known for his long career in Japan, he is also a key figure in Korean contemporary art. Encountering his work in a public museum abroad was a moving experience. It reminded me how the resonance of art transcends national boundaries and speaks deeply, even in unfamiliar places.
As I left the museum, I found myself thinking that this visit had become more than just a part of my trip. It had offered a quiet moment where art gently folded itself into the everyday.
