한국 현대미술의 흐름을 함께 해 온 공간

서울 종로구 삼청로에 자리한 갤러리현대는 1970년 ‘현대화랑’이라는 이름으로 문을 열었습니다. 한국 현대미술의 역사와 함께해온 이곳은 김환기, 박서보, 백남준, 이우환 등 국내 대표 작가들의 초기 활동을 지지하고, 이들을 세계 무대에 알리는 데 중요한 역할을 해온 상업 갤러리입니다.

설립자인 박명자 관장은 당시만 해도 드물었던 현대미술 전문 화랑을 운영하며, 작가들의 전시 기회를 넓히고 미술 시장의 기틀을 다졌습니다. 이후 갤러리는 인사동에서 현재의 삼청동으로 자리를 옮기며, 본관과 현대화랑 두 공간을 중심으로 전시를 이어오고 있습니다. 2000년대 들어서는 보다 실험적이고 다양한 작가들과의 협업도 확대해 왔습니다.

이곳은 단순한 전시장 이상의 의미를 지닙니다. 긴 시간 동안 한국 현대미술의 성장 과정을 곁에서 지켜봐 온 살아 있는 기록이자, 여전히 동시대 미술과 호흡하고 있는 공간입니다.

개관 55주년 기념 전시: 55 YEARS

갤러리현대는 2025년, 개관 55주년을 맞아 기념 전시 《55 YEARS: A Legacy of Modern & Contemporary Korean Art》를 열고 있습니다. 전시는 두 개의 장으로 나뉘어 각각 현대화랑과 본관에서 순차적으로 진행됩니다.

1부는 4월 8일부터 5월 15일까지 현대화랑에서 열렸으며, 박수근, 김환기, 천경자, 이중섭 등 한국 현대미술사의 중요한 이름들을 중심으로, ‘한국적인 예술’의 정체성이 어떻게 형성되었는지를 조망했습니다.

이어지는 2부 전시는 5월 22일부터 7월 6일까지 갤러리현대 본관에서 진행 중입니다. 프랑스 등 해외에서 활동한 디아스포라 작가들과 1960~70년대의 실험미술 작가, 그리고 지금의 동시대 작가들까지 총 18팀의 작품이 한자리에 모입니다. 회화와 조각은 물론 미디어와 설치 등 다양한 매체의 작품을 통해 갤러리현대의 과거, 현재, 미래를 함께 그려보는 기회가 될 것입니다.

이번 전시는 단순한 회고전이 아니라, 앞으로의 10년, 50년을 바라보는 시선으로 구성되어 있어, 한국 현대미술의 방향성과 그 가능성에 대해 생각해보게 만듭니다.

A Place That Has Grown Alongside Korean Contemporary Art

Located on Samcheong-ro in Jongno, Seoul, Gallery Hyundai first opened its doors in 1970 under the name Hyundai Hwarang. As one of Korea’s oldest contemporary art galleries, it has played a pivotal role in shaping the history of Korean modern and contemporary art. The gallery has supported and exhibited leading figures such as Kim Whanki, Park Seo-Bo, Nam June Paik, and Lee Ufan—artists who would go on to gain international recognition.

Founded by Park Myung-ja, Gallery Hyundai was groundbreaking in its early days as a rare space dedicated solely to modern art. It provided crucial exhibition opportunities and helped lay the foundation for Korea’s art market. After relocating from Insa-dong to its current location in Samcheong-dong, the gallery expanded its presence through two venues—its main building and the original Hyundai Hwarang space. In the 2000s, it further broadened its focus by actively collaborating with more experimental and emerging artists.

More than just an exhibition space, Gallery Hyundai is a living archive of Korean contemporary art. It has closely witnessed the evolution of the art scene in Korea and continues to engage with the art of today.

55th Anniversary Exhibition: 55 YEARS

In 2025, Gallery Hyundai celebrates its 55th anniversary with a commemorative exhibition titled "55 YEARS: A Legacy of Modern & Contemporary Korean Art". The exhibition is presented in two parts across the Hyundai Hwarang and the main gallery space.

Part I, held from April 8 to May 15 at Hyundai Hwarang, focused on seminal figures in Korean modernism—such as Park Soo-keun, Kim Whanki, Chun Kyung-ja, and Lee Jung-seop. It explored how a uniquely Korean artistic identity emerged and evolved during the 20th century.

Part II is currently on view at the main gallery from May 22 to July 6. This chapter brings together works by 18 artists and collectives, including Korean diaspora artists, experimental figures from the 1960s and ’70s, and contemporary voices working in a variety of media—painting, sculpture, installation, and new media. The exhibition provides a multifaceted look at the gallery’s past, present, and future.

Rather than a simple retrospective, 55 YEARS is a forward-looking exhibition. It invites viewers to reflect on the future of Korean contemporary art and imagine what the next ten or fifty years might hold.
