경기도 용인,
도시의 소음에서 조금 떨어진 조용한 마을 한쪽에
화가 장욱진(1917–1990)이 생전 거주하던 고택이 있습니다.

이곳은 장욱진 화백의 가족들이 직접 관리하고 있으며,
그가 살았던 양옥과 한옥이 원형에 가깝게 보존되어
하루 일정 중 잠시 들러 고요한 시간을 보내기에 적당한 장소입니다.

별도의 전시 기간 없이도 고택 내부에는
장욱진 화백의 작품과 함께 그와 관련된 자료, 도록 등이 조용히 놓여 있습니다.
방문객은 실내를 자유롭게 둘러보며
작가의 세계를 천천히, 자신의 속도에 맞춰 마주할 수 있습니다.
이 집은 누군가의 거주 공간이었던 만큼,
전시장이 아닌 일상 속 예술 공간에 머무는 감각을 선사합니다.

빨간 벽돌로 지어진 양옥은
화백이 직접 설계하고 지은 주택으로,
그가 세상을 떠나기 전까지 머물던 집이기도 합니다.
실내에는 여행의 추억이 담긴 스케치들이 전시되어 있어
조금 더 개인적이고 특별한 감상이 이어지기도 합니다.
이 양옥은 장욱진의 초기작인 ‘자동차 있는 풍경’(1952) 속에 그려진 집과도 닮아 있어

또한 고택 옆에 자리한 '집운헌(集雲軒)'은
현재 전통 찻집과 아트샵으로 운영 중이며,
한옥 특유의 차분한 분위기에서 잠시 머무르기에 좋습니다.

A Home Where Life and Art Remain

Jang Ukjin’s Former House in Yongin

In a quiet neighborhood of Yongin, Gyeonggi Province,
there stands a modest yet meaningful home once inhabited by renowned Korean painter Jang Ukjin (1917–1990).

This is not a typical museum.
It is the very house where the artist lived with his family, and today, it is still lovingly maintained by them.
Both the Western-style brick house and the adjacent traditional hanok have been preserved much as they were,
offering visitors a rare glimpse into the everyday life and space of a celebrated artist.

Unlike conventional exhibitions, there is no set schedule of shows here.
Instead, visitors are invited to quietly explore the interior,
where a selection of Jang’s artworks, sketchbooks, and catalogues are displayed in an unassuming yet intimate setting.
The experience feels less like walking through a gallery and more like stepping into the artist’s private world.

The red brick house—designed and built by Jang Ukjin himself—holds special significance.
It was his final residence, and inside, sketches inspired by his travels are on view,
adding a deeply personal layer to the visit.
Interestingly, the house closely resembles the Western-style home featured in one of his early works,
“Landscape with a Car” (1952), bridging the gap between his art and everyday life.

Next to the house is Jibunheon (集雲軒), meaning House Where Clouds Gather,
now operated as a small traditional tea house and art shop.
While refreshments are not served within the exhibition space,
this quiet spot provides a peaceful pause for those seeking a moment of reflection.
