‘초대받고 싶지만, 참석하고 싶지는 않다.’
전시 제목부터 복잡한 감정이 스며 있다. 이 문장은 곧장 우리의 마음 어딘가를 건드린다. 인정받고 싶지만, 가까이에서 들여다보이는 건 부담스러울 때. 정수영 작가의 이번 전시는 그 미묘한 거리를 ‘팬트리’라는 일상적 공간에 담아 보여준다.

작가가 보여주는 팬트리는 단지 저장 공간이 아니다. 문이 열려 있거나 반쯤 닫힌 채 내부를 드러내는 이 공간은 누군가의 감정과 욕망, 그리고 취향이 켜켜이 쌓인 심리적 장소처럼 다가온다. 치토스, 제로콜라, 위스키, 뉴욕타임스, 명화 엽서들까지. 모두가 익숙하지만, 그 배치는 누군가의 삶을 상상하게 한다. 사물이 인물을 대신하고, 정물화가 곧 초상화가 된다.

한 작품에서는 크리스마스이브 아침의 식탁 위에 사과 조각 하나와 신문이 놓여 있다. 너무 단출해서 쓸쓸하게 느껴지지만, 그래서 더 많은 감정을 상상하게 만든다. 기쁨이 기대되는 날에 오히려 더 크게 다가오는 고요와 공허함.

전시장 마지막에는 이런 문장이 적혀 있다.
YOU’RE NOT HUNGRY / SHUT THE DAMN DOOR.
이 문장은 식욕보다 감정에 가깝게 다가온다.
‘넌 배고픈 게 아니야. 그러니 그 문 좀 닫아.’
욕망을 정리하고 감정을 수습하려는 순간, 우리 모두에게 필요한 말일지도 모른다.

“I want to be invited, but I don’t want to attend.”
The title of this exhibition already carries a delicate contradiction. It's a sentence that quietly touches a nerve—wanting to be acknowledged, yet resisting the intimacy that comes with being seen. Sooyoung Chung’s latest exhibition at Hakgojae Gallery explores this emotional tension through an unlikely space: the pantry.

Here, the pantry is more than just a storage room. Whether the door is left wide open or half-shut, what’s revealed inside becomes a portrait of someone’s desires, memories, and curated self. Cheetos, Coke Zero, whiskey, Oreos, a copy of the New York Times, and postcards of famous artworks—they're ordinary things, yet together they suggest the emotional landscape of an unseen person. In these works, objects replace the figure. Still lifes become portraits.

In one striking piece, titled Morning, Christmas Eve, a single apple slice and a newspaper rest on an empty table. The restraint in composition creates a stronger emotional impact. On a day associated with celebration, what’s captured is quiet, and perhaps loneliness—a stillness that says more than festive abundance ever could.

At the end of the exhibition, a final phrase confronts us:
YOU’RE NOT HUNGRY / SHUT THE DAMN DOOR.
This isn’t just about food. It sounds more like a gesture toward emotional closure.
“You’re not hungry. Close the door.”
As if reminding us that sometimes, what we crave isn’t what we really need.
